Street and Public Transit Safety

Essential practices for staying aware and minimizing risk while commuting or walking.

Part 1: On the Street (General Awareness)

Situational Awareness

  • • **Keep your head up** and make eye contact with others.
  • • Know the route you plan to take before you leave.
  • • Trust your instincts; if a situation feels wrong, leave immediately.

Minimize Distractions

  • • **Avoid using headphones** or keep them in one ear only.
  • • Limit phone use (texting, browsing) while walking.
  • • If you must take a call, stop and step into a safe, busy location.

Pedestrian Rules

  • • Walk on the sidewalk, or if none is available, walk **against traffic**.
  • • This allows you to see approaching vehicles and potential threats.
  • • Carry a small flashlight or wear reflective items at night.

Secure Valuables

  • • Keep your phone and wallet in a **front pocket** or secured inner pocket.
  • • Use a cross-body bag worn in front of you, not over the shoulder.
  • • Don't display large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry/devices.

Route Planning

  • • Avoid walking alone in **poorly lit areas** or shortcuts at night.
  • • If walking at night, stick to main roads and well-populated areas.
  • • Use apps to share your real-time location with a trusted contact.

Minimize Distractions

  • • Avoid wearing very expensive or flashy watches and jewelry.
  • • If confronted, do not resist. Property can be replaced.
  • • Be cautious of people suddenly asking for directions or the time.
HIGH-RISK ZONES

Part 2: On Public Transit (Risk Minimization)

  1. Wait Securely

Wait for trains/buses in **well-lit, visible areas** where other people are present. Avoid secluded parts of the station or platform.

  2. Choose Your Spot

When riding, sit near the **driver/operator** or in cars/areas with more passengers. Be wary of empty cars, especially at night.

  3. Prepare to Exit

Have your key and phone ready **before you reach your stop**. Avoid fumbling with wallets or bags while stepping off the transit.

  4. Emergency Access

Know the location of emergency call boxes, driver communication buttons, and transit security numbers on platforms and inside vehicles.
