Mandela Day Joy to Sunnyside Lodge

Local Real Estate Agent Joan Ross Brings Mandela Day Joy to Sunnyside Lodge

In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, local real estate agent Joan Ross of Chas Everitt International Property Group hosted a heartwarming event for the residents of Sunnyside Lodge in Plumstead this past Friday, July 18, 2025. The celebration, filled with music and treats, honored the legacy of Nelson Mandela by giving back to the community.

As a career agent specializing in the Plumstead and Diep River areas, Ross places a significant emphasis on consistent engagement with her community, extending her efforts to include those who may not have the fortune of owning their own homes.

The highlight of the day was 67 minutes of musical entertainment provided by Cape Town’s own Rebecca Helen, who generously donated her time and talent. Residents were treated to a High Tea, with delicious baked goods and treats provided by Joan Ross and her family.

Reflecting on the event, Ross shared her enthusiasm. “I’m delighted to share that our Mandela Day event at Sunnyside Lodge on Friday was a great success, and all the residents thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said. “Indeed they have a well run home to call their own.”

Ross also extended her gratitude to the local singing star. “A special thank you to our local singing star Rebecca Helen for generously sharing her time and musical talents with us in a day that seemed to so aptly meet the ideas that Mandela Day is all about,” Ross stated.

The success of the event was a collaborative effort, a point Ross was keen to emphasise. “A successful event is usually due to the efforts of many and this was no exception,” she noted. “As I have found in previous Mandela Day events, it seems to be easy to get assistance as the day itself brings out the best in us and that is surely what it is all about.”

Ross gave a heartfelt thank you to her dedicated support system. “A huge thank you to my family and friends for consistently assisting with my community outreach efforts. Maureen Lotter, Joy Richardson, Hilary & Reza Van Reenen, Carol Hoedemaker, Hannah Meyer, Connor Ross, and Vaughn Barkhuizen, your help with baking all the delicious treats and setting the tables was invaluable.”

The event at Sunnyside Lodge, an organization dedicated to providing “Life with Dignity and Care,” perfectly embodied the Nelson Mandela Day message to “Make Every Day a Mandela Day.”
